Dishwasher Isn't Getting Dishes Clean

A dishwasher that runs a full cycle and leaves dishes dirty is frustrating in a specific way, because nothing looks broken. It fills, it runs, it drains. The dishes are just wrong.
Before assuming a part failed, it's worth knowing that a lot of these calls in Collin and Denton County trace back to water rather than hardware.

1.Pull the filter out of the bottom
Nearly every modern dishwasher has a cylindrical filter that twists out of the floor of the tub. Most people have never touched it. When it clogs, the machine recirculates dirty water over your dishes for the whole cycle. Rinse it under the tap with an old toothbrush. This alone fixes a lot of these calls.
2.Check the spray arm holes
Spin each arm by hand. If it stops against a tall item, that item blocked the wash for the entire cycle. Then look at the holes — hard water scale plugs them from the inside. A toothpick clears them.
3.Consider the water, not the machine
North Texas water is hard. Cloudy glassware with a chalky film that wipes off is mineral scale, not a mechanical failure. Cloudiness that will not wipe off is etching, which is permanent and comes from too much detergent plus soft water. Those two look similar and have opposite fixes.
4.Run the hot tap at the sink first
A dishwasher that starts with a tank of cold water spends the first part of the cycle just catching up. Running the kitchen tap until it's hot before you start the cycle costs nothing and genuinely helps.
5.Check how old the detergent is
Powder and pods lose potency, especially opened and sitting under a humid sink. If the box has been there a year, that's a variable worth eliminating before paying anyone.
What’s Actually Failing
Roughly in order of how often we find each one.
Clogged filter or spray arms
The number one cause and usually not a repair at all. Once the filter packs up, the wash water carries food particles right back onto the dishes.

Circulation pump or wash motor
This is what pressurizes the spray arms. A weakening pump still makes noise and still fills, but doesn't push water hard enough to actually blast food off. The tell is dishes that are cleaner on the bottom rack than the top.

Water inlet valve
If the machine underfills, the arms can't spray properly no matter how good the pump is. Hard water is rough on inlet valves specifically, so this fails more here than it does elsewhere.
Mid-range.
Heating element
Water that never reaches temperature won't dissolve detergent properly or cut grease. If your dishes also come out wet at the end of a heated dry cycle, that points here.
Mid-range.
Chopper or food grinder
Machines with a hard food disposer can jam. When that happens, debris gets recirculated instead of ground and flushed. You'll often find grit on the upturned faces of bowls.

- Dishes come out cool at the end of a heated dry cycle
- There's standing water in the bottom between cycles

- Why is my dishwasher leaving food on the dishes?
- The most common cause is a clogged filter in the floor of the tub, which makes the machine recirculate dirty water. After that: blocked spray arm holes, a weak circulation pump, or the machine underfilling because of a failing inlet valve. Cleaning the filter and clearing the spray arm holes resolves a large share of these with no parts at all.
- Why are my glasses cloudy after the dishwasher?
- If the film wipes off with a damp cloth or vinegar, it's hard water scale — very common in Collin and Denton County — and the fix is rinse aid plus periodic descaling. If it doesn't wipe off, that's etching, which is permanent damage from too much detergent, and the fix is using less.
- Should I rinse dishes before loading them?
- Scrape them, don't rinse them. Modern detergents need some food residue to work against, and a spotless pre-rinsed load can actually come out worse. What matters far more is keeping the filter clean.
