Why won't my washer drain the water out?

In order of likelihood: a clogged coin trap filter, something jammed in the drain pump, a kinked drain hose, a failed lid switch or door lock, or a blocked house drain line. On front loaders, checking the filter behind the small door at the bottom front resolves a large share of these before anyone needs to come out.

Draining and spinning are linked. Most washers refuse to spin until the water is gone, so a drain problem shows up as a spin complaint. That means the place to start is almost always the drain path, not the motor.

There's one thing to check before calling anybody, and on front loaders it fixes this more often than every replacement part combined.

Check These First

All of these are free. Work through them before you call anyone — including us.

1.Find the coin trap
Most front loaders have a small access door at the bottom front corner. Behind it is a filter that catches everything your pockets forget. Coins, hair pins, screws, and — the one we pull out constantly — underwire from bras. Put a towel and a shallow pan down first, because water will come out. If that filter is packed, the pump physically cannot move water.
2.Straighten the drain hose
Pull the machine out and look at the hose running to the standpipe. Kinks happen when a washer gets pushed back into place. It's a thirty-second fix that looks exactly like a dead pump.
3.Redistribute the load
A washer that senses an off-balance drum will refuse to spin up rather than walk across your laundry room. One heavy towel or a rug bunched to one side will do it. Open it, spread the load out, and run a spin-only cycle.
4.Close the lid, hard
Top loaders won't spin unless the lid switch engages. If the switch is worn, an ordinary close isn't enough. If pressing down firmly on the lid gets it spinning, you've found your part.

What’s Actually Failing

Roughly in order of how often we find each one.

Clogged or failed drain pump

The most common real failure. Sometimes the pump itself is dead; more often something got past the filter and jammed the impeller. You can often hear the difference — a jammed pump hums or buzzes without moving water, while a dead one is silent.

Mid-range, and one of the more common parts we carry.

Lid switch or door lock

A safety interlock that tells the machine it's safe to spin. When it fails the washer will fill and wash but never spin, and usually won't drain either. Common on top loaders as they age.

One of the cheaper repairs.

Drive belt

On belt-driven machines a stretched or broken belt means the drum won't turn under load. You'll often hear the motor running normally with no drum movement at all.

Inexpensive part, moderate labor depending on the machine.

Clogged drain line or standpipe

Not the washer's fault at all. If the house drain backs up, the washer has nowhere to push water. The tell is water coming back up the standpipe or overflowing onto the floor during drain.

Varies. Sometimes this is a plumber's job and we'll say so.

Control board or motor

Least likely, and worth ruling everything above out first. Boards get blamed for a lot of drain problems that turn out to be a jammed pump.

The expensive end. Worth an honest conversation on an older machine.

When to Stop and Call

You cleared the filter and it still won't drain
The pump hums but no water moves — something is jammed in the impeller
Water backs up out of the standpipe, which points at the house drain rather than the washer
It drains fine but still refuses to spin, which moves suspicion to the lid switch, belt, or board
