Gas Burner Keeps Clicking After It Lights

A gas burner that keeps sparking after it's lit is one of the more maddening appliance faults, mostly because you can't ignore it while you cook. It's also one where the fix is free more often than not.
The sparker runs because the cooktop thinks the burner hasn't lit yet. Almost always, that's because something is interfering with the igniter rather than because a part has failed.
Check These First
All of these are free. Work through them before you call anyone — including us.
1.Seat the burner cap properly
This is the single most common cause. The cap has to sit perfectly flat and centered on the burner base. A cap that's rotated slightly, or sitting up on an edge, throws off the spark path and the cooktop never registers ignition. Lift it off and set it back down deliberately. You'll often feel it drop into place.
2.Dry everything completely
Moisture is the second most common cause, and it shows up right after you clean the cooktop or after something boils over. Water bridges the igniter and the burner, and the spark goes to the wrong place. Pull the caps and grates, dry everything with a towel, and give it an hour. If the clicking stops, that was it.
3.Clean around the igniter
The igniter is the small ceramic-and-metal nub beside the burner. Food debris packed around it will keep it sparking. An old toothbrush and a bit of rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab, with the cooktop off and cool, clears it.
4.Check the burner ports
The small holes around the burner ring have to be clear for the flame to spread all the way around. If the flame only lights on one side, the cooktop may not register ignition. A toothpick or a straightened paperclip clears them — never a wooden toothpick that could break off inside.
What’s Actually Failing
Roughly in order of how often we find each one.
Misaligned or wet burner cap
Between them, these two account for most of the clicking calls we get. Both are free to fix and we'd rather you tried them before paying for a visit.
Free.
Cracked igniter electrode
The ceramic body of the igniter can crack from thermal shock — often from a cold spill onto a hot burner. Once cracked, the spark leaks to ground instead of jumping the intended gap, so it sparks endlessly without lighting reliably.
Mid-range, and a straightforward replacement.
Failed spark module
The module fires the igniters. When it fails it can spark continuously, spark all burners at once when you turn on one, or spark with everything switched off. Continuous sparking with all knobs off points here more than anywhere else.
The larger repair on this list, and less common than the others.
Worn switch behind the knob
The switch tells the module to stop sparking once the burner lights. When contacts wear, that signal never arrives and the sparker keeps running even though the flame is fine.

When to Stop and Call
- It keeps clicking with every knob in the off position — that's the spark module and it needs looking at
- You smell gas at any point, in which case shut the gas off at the valve, ventilate, and don't use the cooktop
- You've dried it thoroughly and reseated the caps and it's still going
- The igniter is visibly cracked or chipped

- The cooktop is still trying to ignite because it hasn't registered a flame. The two most common reasons are a burner cap that isn't seated flat and centered, and moisture around the igniter after cleaning or a boil-over. Both are free to fix. - Is it dangerous if my gas burner keeps clicking?
- The clicking itself is a spark, and the gas is lit, so it isn't an immediate emergency. But it shouldn't be left indefinitely, and if you smell gas at any point you should shut off the gas at the valve, ventilate the room, and stop using the cooktop until it's been looked at.
- Why do all my burners click when I only turn on one?
- All the igniters fire off a shared spark module, so a fault in that module or in one burner's switch can trigger the whole set. If it's sparking with every knob off, that points squarely at the module.
